Worst Quote Ever for Serious Musicians

“Touring is no longer an ordinary thing where you play an instrument in jeans and a T-shirt. It has some pizzazz these days, and I’m definitely bringing the pizzazz with a lot of bells and whistles.”

So says Katy Perry while discussing the addition of smells to her upcoming tour.

See the thing is, if you are an honestly good musician, some people will actually pay to see you standing there playing an instrument in jeans and a tshirt.

Hear, hear! Great post, Karen. Wholeheartedly agree.

(Though, my interest is piqued over smells being pumped into a concert. It would have to be strong to overpower beer burp and pot.)

Alan – She claims it will be smells of cotton candy and cupcakes. Which, when mixed with the aforementioned beer burps and pot, just smells like, oh I don’t know….the State Fair.

(btw, that’s three mentions of pot on the blog this week. Shall I just declare it Pot Week and call it good?)

Wait – the addition of smells? Seriously?

Although, I always dressed up when I was in a band. Then again, no one ever paid to see me play (badly).

  • Karen Fayeth

Lucky – Yes, seriously. The smell-o-vision idea seems…weird.

good point, I think that the idea of having talent as a performer seems to have been forgotten..

Katy Perry HAS to rely on costumes and gimmicks. Actual musicians don’t. The sad part of that reality is that she’s the one raking in all the $$, while tons of musicians struggle to make rent. If you think about it, though, it’s always actually been that way. The huge majority goes for entertainment, not music–and they always have.

Anji – A lot of tricks in the recording studio can make up for a whole host of sins. Kind of a shame, but true.

  • Karen Fayeth

Elise – I know, I know….I don’t have to like it. I think the short attention span problem is getting worse, not better.

I actually like to sit and watch a talented musician stand there and make music. But I appreciate to many, that is boring.

Plus, I could do without auto tuning, thankyouverymuch.
