Electronic Confession

I don’t really consider myself to be a gadget kind of girl. I mean, I do like my electronic device (ahemiPadcoff) now and again, but I don’t tend to get every new device the moment it hits the market.

It’s just not that important to me. Fer goodness sakes! I still have a tube television! (*gasp*)

The iPod I use is the second generation shuffle, which is still my favorite iPod.

I do have an iPhone 4, but I bought that when I started this job almost 17 months ago. I had an iPhone 3 prior, but an OS update had rendered it unusable (sooo slooow), so I upgraded to a new device.

My iPhone4 works great. I’m happy with it. Nary a problem. Yep. It’s all good.

So I was looking in my work ordering system the other day, and lo and behold, it reported I was eligible for a phone upgrade.

And I thought naaaah, I don’t need a new iPhone 4s.

And I thought naaah.

And I thought some more.

And then I thought…well maybe.

And I thought. And thought.

And then without thinking, I ordered one.

(My employer doesn’t pay for the device, by the way. Only the service.)

Maybe I am a bit of a gadget head. At least about Apple gear. I’m quite susceptible to the magic they weave.

Do you suppose Siri will take my confession?

Bless me Siri, for I have sinned. I have lust in my heart for a device I totally don’t need.

Now where is that delivery? Huh, huh? Where? How about now? How about now?

Siri, are we there yet?

I’m very happy with my iPhone 4 but would love a 4s just for SIRI. So very, very cool… Alas, I’m not eligible for several months. I can wait but I’ll expect a full report, mmmkkk?

P.S. I just read about the supposed battery problems with the 4s/os5 upgrade. It’s funny… my battery life has been exceptionally good since the upgrade. I sometimes think they make this stuff up just to mess with Apple.

Natlie – I hear a lot about the battery issues too. Good news that you aren’t having the issue. I hear Apple is going to put out a patch soon to help fix that.

  • Jill

Ha….I am antiquated when it comes to phones! BASIC BASIC for me…but I admire those who negotiate all those apps!!!!

    • Karen Fayeth

Jill – You are probably much happier having a basic phone. Once you get sucked into the whole smartphone thing, you can never go back!!

      Thanks for the comment!

  • Betsy

I have to confess I use gadgets all the time…curling iron, mechanical pencil, apple corer.. I guess I’m addicted. They make life so easy! Happy TT! :)

    • Karen Fayeth

Betsy – It’s true, gadgets are what make life easy (they are supposed to, anyway!). I try not to stay up on all the latest electronic stuff. But those iPhones! I just can’t resist!!

      Happy TT to you too!!

  • The Silver Fox

I’ll get an iPhone when they invent one with a rotary dial!

  • Lucky

I have a not very old ‘droid. . .I got it just before Verizon stopped giving free upgrades (but after they got iPhones – the iPhone was not included in the free upgrade program, oddly enough). But I hear Siri calling my name. It won’t be long. Not long at all.

  • Kris

Still the handy and robust old Nokia for me!

    • Karen Fayeth

Kris – There are some great Nokia devices. But the iPhone…it sings to you!! Maybe you and Lucky should go to the Apple store together?

LOL!! I’m just trying to drag people down with me…..

  • Mrsupole

It does sing to one’s heart after one discovers it. I can upgrade in Mar. and am debating about waiting another year for when the i5 comes out. I was kinda disappointed it was kept as an iOS4S but I have heard that the SIRI is really cool. I hope you have a lot of fun with your new iPhone, and hope the battery does last. That is the only problem I have and hope they fix sometime. Attached to the charger sucks. Attached to the iPhone, oh yeah.

Thanks for playing in this weeks TT, hope you had fun.

    God bless.

Karen, did you see my comment to your last post? There’s a link to something I think you’d enjoy..

  • Anji

I’m pleased to have been able to pass it on.

I notice that you have an iPad.

What can you do with an iPad that you can’t do with your home computer? And vice-versa, what can you do with your home computer that you can’t do with your iPad?

What do you use the iPad for?

I just got one of those $99 HP Touchpads to see what the hullabaloo is all about. So far, not much for me.

Ephraim – I actually spent some time thinking about how to answer this in a thoughtful way.

I resisted buying an iPad for quite some time because, as you noted, I didn’t see how it would add to what I’ve already got in my electronic life.

What’s odd about the iPad (or other tablets) is that it doesn’t replace something else. It’s an add in. It has it’s own place in the spectrum.

I laugh at myself sometimes as I have my MacBook Air, my iPad and my iPhone all in a pile next to me on the couch. I mean…geez! That’s a little bit of overkill.

I use the iPad mostly to consume media. I watch television and movies on the device, and it’s main and best use for me is for traveling. It’s much easier to pack the iPad instead of the larger laptop.

It has my personal and work emails on it and my media (movies, ebooks, music, etc). When I recently traveled to NM, I was able to keep up with work and I watched “Black Swan” on the plane.

Now, the question is…couldn’t you have done that on your laptop? Answer is yes. But the iPad is as small and thin as a magazine. So I don’t carry magazines, books, or laptop cables in my bag. Having space in my carry on is meaningful.

It’s an extravagance, and I get that. But I find I’m using my laptop less and less. I still prefer the laptop for writing and blogging, but it’s seeing a lot less use as the iPad is my all in one.

Over time, are you finding more use for your TouchPad?
