Happy Awkward Easter!

Because you didn’t ask, I decided to provide a blast from the past.

Easter, April 8, 1976 from our backyard in Albuquerque:

I’m only sorry I had to drag my siblings into this.

I’m the shortest one. You know, the one with a deathgrip on my Easter basket.

Man, I loved that dress. It had a sash and everything.

We’d been to Easter Mass that morning.

Mom had sung “Jeeeesus Chriiiiist is riiiiiisen todaaaaaay!” loudly along with the congregation and the church organ (man, she loved that song. Something about all the allelujahs.)

Ham was in the oven and the backyard Easter egg hunt was soon to begin.

I always did love Easter. A new dress. New white sandals. A basket full of candy. Yeah baby!

Anyhow, Happy Easter to all who celebrate it!

Oh, also, because no one asked, on the next page of that same photo album….

Here’s what the 1976 Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta looked like:

I wish there were some place to go besides church to sing all those songs. I'd probably really enjoy belting out "Jeeeesus Chriiiiist is riiiiiisen todaaaaaay!!" But I could do without the rest of it. I'm lapsed. Except for the singing of the hymns. Maybe I could start my own "church." All hymns, all the time! Sing along, everyone!

Your writing made me cry. My wife tells of her youth when she would get a new pair of shoes at Easter time. They had straps and everything.

This is one of my favorite hymns at any time of year.

    Que Dios te Bendiga.

Lucky – I would SO be all about a church to go belt out fun songs and not get told what to do all the time.

I think you are on to something there!!

Ephraim – I bet you think the miracle of Easter is the whole resurrection thing. Pffft! It's the miracle of getting to wear white shoes with the toes out, and straps and a cute buckle and everything!

BTW, I'm always blown away by the sheer magnitude of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. I can't imagine going to church and having that as part of the service. I mean, an out of tune organ and my mom was how I was raised! :)

    Blessings!

Take a look at this page.

Every week Mark Steyn writes a column about a song. Last week it was about Easter and America's celebration of it.

    Interesting column.
